Construction of the Town Hall in Tallinn has been dated back to the second half of the 13th century, but it was not until 1322 that it was first mentioned in writing. The building took on its current appearance in 1404. Civic power was based in the Town Hall all the way through until 1970, and it has served a representative function for the city government since 1975. The Town Hall today is a concert venue and historical sight. 

An Estonian-speaking guide will be telling us all about the history of the Town Hall on 6 August. We will have the chance to hone our language skills by asking the guide questions and reading the information boards displayed throughout the building.

Language Roulette is a series of virtual meetings coorganized by teachers and mentors of the Estonian language houses of the Integration Foundation, which brings together people who want to practice Estonian in a new format of short conversations in the Zoom environment.

Participants of the Language Roulette can chat for a limited time in Estonian on a given topic in a random group. After that, the group will be changed and a new conversation on the new topic will begin. Both language learners (starting from A2 level) and mentors who speak Estonian at the level of native speaker will participate in the conversations.

This series of cooking evenings being run in a cooking class in Pärnu will take Estonian language enthusiasts on a journey through the cuisines of different continents and cultures.  

Over three hours, people living and working in Pärnu and Pärnu County who speak languages other than Estonian can practise the national language and dive into the cultures of different nations on different continents. Since the cooking evenings will be conducted in Estonian, this will encourage the participants to talk to one another and share their thoughts in the language – providing them with language practice they won’t even realise they’re getting! The cooking evenings represent an active and attractive way of spending time together. 

The focus of this month’s event, which is being held as part of the cooking class at Pernova Education Centre in Pärnu, is Mediterranean food. Advance registration is required.

A series of nine events under the umbrella title of “Let’s Sing in Estonian!” is bringing together residents of Pärnu who speak other languages as their mother tongues to learn to sing simple songs together in the national language.  

The songs were chosen according to the preferences of the participants. During the first half of each lesson, the participants study the lyrics of the songs. They include folk songs, campfire classics, choral pieces, pop numbers and Eurovision evergreens. 

What does each song say? Who sings it? Do the lyrics contain words and expressions that are new to the participants? A musician who is both a singer and a singing teacher accompanies the participants on an instrument.   

Singing together fosters solidarity and friendship and engenders a sense of community. This is reflected in the fact that otherwise reserved Estonians practise for months and even years to take part in the Song Celebrations, which are the nation’s pride and joy. What feeling does that give you?  

Musicians Olavi Kõrre, Ado Kirsi ja Andrus Haugas lead, support and assist the participants in learning the songs or playing instruments. The event is designed to be fun, so those taking part need not have perfect pitch or be professional singers!

We will be paying a late-night visit to the denizens of Tallinn Zoo, where a guide will be telling us fascinating stories and answering any questions we might have.

Together we will find out what sort of night life the animals enjoy, discussing everything in Estonian as we go.

The Book Club is off to the theatre!  

This time we will be learning and practising Estonian in the world of puppetry. 

Join us on this fun excursion to the Museum of Puppetry Arts, during which  

we will find out about the history of puppet theatre and an instructor will give us the chance to try our hand at being puppet masters ourselves.
