Cooking together – Ukrainian dishes B1+ (Pärnu)

We will get acquainted with Ukrainian cuisine, prepare food together, and practise Estonian.

Did you know that in Ukrainian cuisine, people cook and stew rather than fry, salt rather than smoke? That salads include sliced rather than chopped vegetables? That hot or cold soups – borscht, okroshka, and other soups – are eaten almost every day? Or that pork and pork fat, sour cream, sunflower oil, and eggs are used a lot, and onions, garlic, horseradish, dill, parsley, cumin, and thyme are popular seasonings?

Nutrition consultant Ülle Niilisk will divide participants into small groups and each group will have to start preparing a specific dish based on a recipe. We will set the table together and during the meal, we will talk about Ukrainian customs and national costumes.

Participants will be able to develop their skills of listening (explanations and teamwork in Estonian), speaking (conversation), and reading (understanding recipes) in Estonian. Cooking together is also suitable for more courageous language learners at the A2 level.

Museum Friday – Estonian History Museum. The Great Guild Hall B1+ (Tallinn)

Museum Friday is a series of activities supporting the learning of the Estonian language for adults whose mother tongue is not Estonian.  As part of the series, we will visit various museums in Tallinn (e.g. the bastion passages and the Carved Stone Museum, the Adamson-Eric Museum, the Kalamaja Museum, and the Great Guild Hall of the Estonian History Museum), including a tour with a museum pedagogue in Estonian. After the tour, the participants can explore the museum on their own.

Museum Friday takes place once a month on Fridays: 27 January, 17 February, 24 March, and 21 April.

The Great Guild of Tallinn, whose members were the most powerful and richest merchants in the city, was founded around 1325. In 1417, a building with a high gable roof was completed in late Gothic style. The Great Guild Hall has had many functions: besides being a place for hosting the events of the merchants who were members of the Great Guild, it was also the starting and ending point of processions. In addition, weddings, religious services, theatre performances, and court hearings were held in the hall. Since 1872, the hall was at the disposal of the Tallinn Stock Exchange Committee. A wine cellar operated in the hall as early as in the Middle Ages. In 1896, the first film screening in Estonia took place in the Great Guild Hall.

Participants can practice listening (listening to the museum pedagogue), speaking (asking questions from the museum pedagogue), and reading (independently exploring the museum display), as well as increase their cultural and historical awareness in Estonian.

  • Language level required: B1+
  • Time: 21.04 from 14.00-15.30
  • Location: the Great Guild Hall of the Estonian History Museum (Pikk 17, Tallinn)
  • No of participants: 25
